Teaser Tuesday: All Systems Red (Martha Wells)

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly meme now hosted by The Purple Booker, wherein you open your current read to a random page and share two teaser sentences from it.

This week I'm featuring the first novella in The Murderbot DiariesALL SYSTEMS RED, by Martha Wells. It's a quick and engrossing science fiction survival thriller of murder, escape, and corporate conspiracy on an unexplored world, and I enjoyed it so much I devoured it in half a day. For the teaser I offer the first three sentences of the book, which tell exactly what you can expect from the story and its awkward and highly relatable main character - don't let the "Murderbot" moniker fool you.

All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries, #1)

"I could have become a mass murderer after I hacked my governor module, but then I realized I could access the combined feed of entertainment channels carried on the company satellites. It had been well over 35,000 hours or so since then, with still not much murdering, but probably, I don't know, a little under 35,000 hours of movies, serials, books, plays, and music consumed. As a heartless killing machine, I was a terrible failure."

Teaser Tuesday: WHAT I LIKE ABOUT YOU (Marisa Kanter)

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly meme now hosted by The Purple Booker, wherein you open your current read to a random page and share two teaser sentences from it.

I've decided to start posting teasers again!! To kick things off I'm spotlighting a book I actually re-read last week (apologies to the meme rules), so today's pick is What I Like About You by Marisa Kanter, a fun and flirty YA contemporary romance about books, blogging, and baking. For more info be sure to check out my blog tour review tomorrow, which will include 10 reasons you should read this book ASAP (if the quote below doesn't convince you ;).

To further break the meme rules, instead of the requisite two sentences I present a section on friendship that was just too good not to share. Enjoy! :)

What I Like About You

"Friendship--real friendship--isn't easy. It's destroying Barbie dream houses and screaming in movie theater parking lots and screwing up, sometimes badly. It's a mess of lines drawn in the sand and questioning loyalties and answering difficult DMs. It's making comparisons and exposing insecurities.
But it's also bowling by our own rules. Laughing until our stomachs cramp and tears stream down our cheeks. It's knowing that I have people, real people, from all over the country in my pocket, always a text or tweet or lunch table away when I need them. It's knowing the world might be a trash fire, but it's less trash when there are people to help navigate the darkness.
Friendship is messy. Hard. Infuriating. Awesome. Fragile. Durable. Impossible. Worth it.
Always worth it." (Pages 383-384)

Teaser Tuesday: Stitching Snow (R.C. Lewis)

It's time for Teaser Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading, where you open your current read to a random page and pick two teaser sentences.

This week I'm reading an October release a little early to prep for interviewing the author: Stitching Snow by R.C. Lewis, a YA Sci-Fi retelling of Snow White! The teaser:

Stitching Snow

"Maybe they'd keep me away to spite my father.
Maybe they'd kill me just to simplify their lives."

Check out the book on Goodreads!

Teaser Tuesday: Fortune's Pawn (Rachel Bach)

It's time for Teaser Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading, where you open your current read to a random page and pick two teaser sentences.

I'm participating in Gail's Book Group, and her June pick is Fortune's Pawn by Rachel Bach (Goodreads), an adult Sci-Fi thriller. I'm two-thirds through and really enjoying it - I've been in a bit of a reading slump and this book is proving the perfect cure! Will be snagging the rest of the trilogy from my library this afternoon. But now, the teaser:

Fortune's Pawn (Paradox, #1)

"I stayed perfectly still, one finger poised over a switch at the base of the console like I was contemplating pressing it, and waited. A second later, I saw it again, a flash of movement in my rear cam."

Teaser Tuesday: Graduation Day (Joelle Charbonneau)

It's been quite a while, but I'm once more participating in Teaser Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading, where you open your current read to a random page and pick two teaser sentences!

I'm currently reading Graduation Day by Joelle Charbonneau (Goodreads), the third and final book in The Testing series. I've really enjoyed this series (you can find my reviews of Books 1 & 2 here and here) and can't wait to see how it all ends!

Graduation Day (The Testing, #3)

"Blood pounds in my ears as I run.
Away from whoever is now running behind me."

Teaser Tuesday: Parallel

It's time for Teaser Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading, where you open your current read to a random page and pick two teaser sentences.

This week I'm reading Parallel by Lauren Miller (Goodreads), a stand-alone YA about an 18 year-old girl who has her life altered daily by the choices of her 17 year-old self in a parallel world. An interesting concept, to say the least.

Parallel

I hesitate, then point my gun at him and pull the trigger.
There is a moment of sweet, precious silence. Then:
"Cut!"

Teaser Tuesday: The Elite

It's time for Teaser Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading, where you open your current read to a random page and pick two teaser sentences.

This week I'm re-reading The Selection by Kiera Cass, in preparation to tackle the upcoming sequel and today's teaser title, The Elite, due to release in late April (Goodreads). Today's sentences are the very first of the book, and are quite squeeful, in my opinion. Flipping around, though, I can tell you that America still has a lot to learn - and I may have caught sight of a catfight. Or two. ;} Enjoy!

The Elite (The Selection, #2)

"The Angeles air was quiet, and for a while I lay still, listening to the sound of Maxon's breathing. It was getting harder and harder to catch him in a truly calm and happy moment, and I soaked up the time, grateful that he seemed to be at his best when he and I were alone."

Teaser Tuesday: Mila 2.0

It's time for Teaser Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading, where you open your current read to a random page and pick two teaser sentences.

This week, my read is an ARC of Mila 2.0 by Debra Driza (Goodreads):

MILA 2.0 (MILA 2.0, #1)

"I crept inside the darkened room...and almost fell flat on my face.

My toe, it had caught on something.

Only that patch of floor should be bare."

Teaser Tuesday: Etiquette & Espionage

It is time for Teaser Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading, where you open your current read to a random page and share two teaser sentences.

This week's read is an ARC I just received and will be starting today! I've been waiting for it to arrive for over a month, and dying to read it all year. It's "Book the First" in Gail Carriger's new YA Alternate Historical Paranormal Steampunk series, Finishing School. Here's the teaser:

Dimity looked at her, still recovering. "Really, Sophronia, it makes me most uncomfortable how you manage to sort everything out every time I faint."

I can't wait to get started! So what are you reading this week?

Monsters & Demons & Killers, Oh My!

It's time for Teaser Tuesday, a bookish meme brought to us by MizB at Should Be Reading! You grab your current read, open to a random page, and share two “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page.

I am currently reading Mr. Monster by Dan Wells, the second book in the John Cleaver series about a teen sociopath who struggles to keep his inner madness at bay while "protecting" his small town from serial killers. It's spooky and creepy and awesome, but most importantly it isn't focused on a teen girl discovering her special power while falling in love with some hot broody guy! (I'm really sick of YA dystopian/paranormal romances right now - can you tell? ;)

"Well, normal on the surface. Somewhere inside,
Mr. Monster was just waiting for me to make a mistake."

Dan Wells is an amazing writer who devoted himself to his research, so you can read assured of the accuracy of his facts on psychology, serial killers, and mortuary practices. This series isn't for the squeamish, but if you can take, say, Bones or Dexter without much trouble, definitely give these books a try.

Teaser Tuesday: Legend

It is time for Teaser Tuesday, a weekly meme (what does that mean anyway??) hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading, where you open your current read to a random page and pick two teaser sentences.

This week's read:

Legend (Legend, #1)

"One of these is the Republic's flag, imprinted faintly against the metal.
Another is a small red number: 318."

Teaser Tuesday: DOSAB Edition

Time for another Teaser Tuesday from Should Be Reading!

Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1)

I am currently reading the heavily praised Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. Don't hate me, but I'm not as impressed. Her writing style just isn't to my tastes. I mean, "Mondayness"? "Januaryness"? Reallyness? But it got better (somewhat), so I plan to finish it. My two teaser sentences from DOSAB:

“It seemed impolite to peek, as if Izîl’s…condition…ought to be ignored, like a lazy eye or birthmark. His shadow revealed what looking at him directly did not.”

Teaser Tuesdays: The Viking Ship

It is time for my first Teaser Tuesday, a concept brought to us by MizB on her blog Should Be Reading.

After following the zany and wonderful Maureen Johnson for many months on Twitter (@maureenjohnson), I finally brought home a stack of her books from the library. I'm on a travel kick right now (read: today, for some reason - also watching Rick Steves' Europe), so 13 Little Blue Envelopes it was. Currently on Chapter Richard and the Queen, and quite enjoying it. :)

Here's my teaser tidbit:

"She was standing in the airport in Copenhagen, staring at a doorway, trying to figure out if it was a) a bathroom and (b) what kind of bathroom it was. The door merely said H."

These "day" posts are fun! I'm definitely enjoying them, and I hope you are too! XD So what are you reading today?
