The Power of Nunchi by Euny Hong (HBK)

With a little normalcy returning to my world I've finally felt like reading non-fiction again, so I grabbed this from my library pile and in less than a week I'm already two-thirds through. While a little repetitive at first, it's been an easy and interesting read and I've especially enjoyed learning about not just nunchi but Korean culture. Looking forward to observing just how much (or how little) nunchi I possess once we can be more social again.

Vanessa Yu's Magical Paris Tea Shop by Roselle Lim (ARC)

2.5 Stars. A lighthearted contemporary of magic and romance that I unfortunately did not enjoy due to the misleading title, flat and flowery description, inconsistent main character who despised her gift, and a romance I did not ship. I did appreciate the clean story with its happy ending, but otherwise there was disappointingly little I enjoyed in this book. I'd still be inclined to recommend it for female romance readers as a summer beach read though, but only if you are decently educated and interested in France, fashion, elevated food, art, and architecture. Aurora Rising is sadly yet another last-picked team of misfits story that, once a favorite premise of mine, I'm now growing weary of. Although this set-up can have a plethora of mix-and-match plot options, Aurora Rising (like most) unfortunately stuck to the popular (overused) storyline and checked most of the popular (overused) subplot boxes: A "special" girl and her mysterious quest get the misfit team into trouble and send them on the run whereby they seek refuge on a criminal space station and are forced to stage a heist that leads to the discovery of governmental cover-up and a universal conspiracy.

Been there, done that more times than I care to count. Despite a colorful team of diverse, snarky characters and an intriguing space setting, I found myself bored around the halfway mark and considered throwing in the towel. It didn't help that there were over half a dozen FIRST PERSON point of view characters, and all those "I's" had me unsure whose head I was in at all times.

But I persevered, and eventually finished. Am I glad I did? Sure. The beginning was pretty good, the action eventually picked back up during the heist, and the Kal/Aurora bond relationship (my favorite kind) added a certain sweetness to the otherwise violent plot. There were also a few small twists at the end that diverted from the overused norm, and with its "We're off to save the universe" conclusion I'm now curious enough to try the next book if I get my hands on a softcover.

Do I recommend it? If you love Firefly reboots and really enjoyed M.K. England's The Disasters (which I sadly never finished due to almost exactly the same reasons I barely finished this one), Aurora Rising may be just the read you're looking for.


STRENGTHS:

✔  The way the team meshed while still maintaining individuality

✔  Magellan

✔  Hitchhiker's Guide-esque entries between chapters


WEAKNESSES:

✘  Overused premise, story, plot and subplots

✘  Over half a dozen first person point of view characters I couldn't tell apart

✘  Choppy writing style

The Stars We Steal by Alexa Donne (ARC)

Borrowed this from the library's teen ARC shelf. It's a retelling of Jane Austen's Persuasion meets "The Bachelorette in space," both of which I'm definitely recognizing. Currently a little over 70 pages in and with its familiar feel and undercurrent of intrigue I'm actually quite enjoying it.

Ink and Bone was one of those books I really enjoyed but can't put my finger on exactly why. It was just a really good read as a whole: an engaging voice, a strong cast of characters I (mostly) kept straight, vivid settings and description, and an intriguing alternate history and story. If there was one thing that did stand out for me though, it was a lack of foreshadowing. I had little idea what would happen next at any given moment, but I enjoyed it that way as I shared in Jess's surprise, shock, and anguish. It wasn't a light story with its smugglers and book burners and countries at war, but I wouldn't call it a heavy story either. It had the comfortable weight of Harry Potter, an elite society with a full history and world power, and the boy who joins its ranks and discovers the light but also very dark sides of it. The book ended on a complete arc with no cliffhanger, although there is definitely more to Jess's story. Like what came before I have almost no idea what to expect from the next book or the rest of the five-book series, and very much look forward to finding out what happens to Jess and the Great Library in Book 2, Paper and Fire.

In a Sentence: An entertaining teen sci-fi thriller with an engrossing competition and diverse cast but very confusing description and way too many characters to keep straight.

>>STRENGTHS

• Main character Emmett was one of the best teen male protagonists I've ever read. He didn't swear like a sailor or constantly think about sex as most other teen male protagonists in my reading experience tend to do. He also didn't objectify girls, instead treating them just like the guys, and even when he eventually fell for one he treated her with respect. He was playful and snarky but with a dark streak and quirky anger issues that made him real and relatable. I thrilled at his triumphs and despaired at his losses and became so invested in his competition position that I worried about the scoreboard as much as he did.

• Although the contest setup was rather Divergent with its shifting scoreboards and somewhat Hunger Games with its deadly consequences, the addition of the mysterious and almost magical Nyxia material was unique and intriguing. The story was strung with dark and exciting twists, some of which I saw coming but generally enjoyed regardless. I especially anticipated the last chapter's twist but it only made the conclusion even more tense and had me literally on the edge of my seat as I read it.

>>WEAKNESSES

• I had two great struggles with Nyxia, the first being description. I couldn't picture much of anything for some mysterious reason, which meant I was very confused where the characters, settings, ships, suits, tech, aliens, and pretty much anything else described was concerned. But despite many paused moments of great ponder, my confusion didn't disrupt my reading too much.

• My other great struggle was the massive cast of characters, the important of which numbered almost 30 by the end. With ten initial competitors plus ship crew, family members, and Emmett's flashback friends, it took over half the book to mostly but never fully keep everyone straight. And then two-thirds into the book, a whole new bunch of characters were introduced, renewing my confusion. Needless to say Emmett was the only one I could recall with any certainty by the end, and I'll definitely need to re-read this book before the second or be completely and hopelessly lost.

• I also wasn't crazy about the romance. Since Emmett treats the girls just like the guys for most of the book there wasn't even a hint of romance until the last 100 pages or so, and because of this it was a rather bad case of  instalove that felt very rushed and sadly culminated quickly. Given the situation though I guess it was realistic, and for the most part I'll be interested to see how it expands in the next book (especially since it'll be shouldering some serious baggage).

Conclusion: While I couldn't picture much of the description and struggled to keep the characters straight, I did become quite engrossed in the thrilling competition and really connected to the main character. After the "End of Part 1" cliffhanger ending I look forward to continuing Emmett's story in the next book, Nyxia Unleashed, and highly recommend Nyxia if you enjoy sci-fi thrillers.

Shadow Call by Adrianne Strickland & Michael Miller (ARC)

I couldn't help signing up for the blog tour and after re-reading the first book I'm now powering through this sequel! Just like Shadow Run it began a bit awkward but once more I found myself hit with a shocking twist about page 40 and now the story is off and running!

After reading a book on Lagom I wanted more in a similar vein and picked up books on Hygge and Lykke. I'm not connecting to Hygge as much as Lagom, but it's still an interesting and relaxing read.

Wake Up, Sleeping Beauty vol. 1 by Megumi Morino (PBK)

5 Stars. I brought this home from the library and read it without even glancing at the summary, and don't let the romantic title and summary fool you: this is first and foremost an original and rather chilling GHOST STORY. With its mysterious premise and realistic main male character, the start of the eerie story of shut-in Shizu and scaredy-cat Tetsu was an engrossing one that found me reluctant to put it down and finishing well past bedtime. I can't wait to get my hands on the next volume and see how things progress!

During my 3-week January-February flu I decided to finally read the entire 100 Cupboards series. Books 1 & 2 went well, but I've been struggling for about a month now to finish this final Book 3 as I don't think I'm going to like the foreshadowed series end. Still, I'm less than 100 pages away and feel I really should finish it eventually, I've come this far.

Release Spotlight: SHATTER (Aprilynne Pike) | HONOR AMONG THIEVES (Rachel Caine & Ann Aguirre)

Today I spotlight a long-awaited sequel, and a thrilling new sci-fi!

The first is the second book in the Glitter duology by Aprilynne Pike: SHATTER! I just finished it yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed the easy and engrossing end. If you haven't yet tried the Ni-Fi duology, I highly recommend it for a binge!

The second is HONOR AMONG THIEVES by Rachel Caine and Ann Aguirre. I managed to lay hands and eyes on an early ARC and found it an engrossing and exhilarating teen sci-fi with a kickass female lead and sweet but strong sentient ship. If you enjoy sci-fi, it's not to be missed!
