The #FridayReads Review (10/16/20)

Welcome to The #FridayReads Review, a regular Friday segment where I share what I've been reading the past week, and what I'm planning to read next! Want to join the Friday fun? Post your own #FridayReads Review and leave the link in the Comments below, or just Comment with what you've been reading!

>> CURRENTLY READING <<
Snapdragon by Kat Leyh (PBK)
I've been excited by the surge in MG/YA graphic novels of late but haven't been keeping up with them as I should, so I only discovered Snapdragon last week. I just finished Part 1 of this diverse and currently contemporary story and am intrigued to find out in Part 2 if it's actually in fact magical realism...

>> JUST FINISHED <<
The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket (HBK)
3 Scribbles. Re-read. I was feeling nostalgic (as I do in the fall) and randomly thought of this series again, so I picked up the first book from the library and found myself reading the entire thing in less than 3 hours. It was both what I remembered and not, unsettling yet playful but also surprisingly really simple as it barely hints at all the layers of dark secrets to come. I vaguely recall that I got a bit bored with the later books in the series and distinctly recall that I hated the last with its depressing end, but I couldn't help but put the second book on library hold and will be curious to see how far I end up diving into this disturbing children's series now that I've begun anew. Review to come.

(subject to change with my ever-shifting reading whims)
Servamp vol. 2 by Tanaka Strike (PBK)
The first volume was surprisingly good (if a little gory) with a unique premise and engaging characters - I couldn't believe I'd never heard of the series before now! I've put the rest of the released volumes on library hold (there are currently 13, I believe?) for a serious binge very soon.

Curtsies & Conspiracies (Finishing School, #2)
Curtsies & Conspiracies by Gail Carriger (PBK)
Last month I was in such a reading slump but still itching to read something so I finally just started re-reading my favorite series! Thoroughly enjoyed the first book but I've never been much of a series binger so now in the midst of Book the Second I'm starting to get antsy for a different read. Not sure exactly what though, so in the meantime Sophronia's adventures continue.

The Stone Heart (The Nameless City, #2)Kiss Me at the Stroke of Midnight 1Yokai Rental Shop Vol. 1

The Stone Heart by Faith Erin Hicks (PBK)
3 Stars. While the story is interesting, for such a big fantasy plot it reads rather subdued and simplistic. Still I enjoyed the very quick read and look forward to finishing the series with what I believe is the final volume next year.

Kiss Me at the Stroke of Midnight vol. 1 by Rin Mikimoto (PBK)
4 Stars. Almost didn't bring this home from the library and now so glad I did! Despite the boy's caboose fetish I really enjoyed the characters, humor and story - will definitely be picking up the next volume!

Yokai Rental Shop vol. 1 by Shin Mashiba (PBK)
3 Stars. Not quite as good as I'd been hoping but a little more interesting than I was expecting with both an unusual yet also rather familiar premise with intriguing characters and twists. Might give the second volume a try.

Ash Princess by Laura Sebastian (ARC)
Still eyeing this after a month - time for fantasy?

The Fill-In Boyfriend
The Fill-In Boyfriend by Kasie West (ARC)
Although I have a stack of must-read titles I just couldn't settle on one so as the motto goes: when in doubt, read Kasie West! (That's always been my motto, anyway. ;) No surprise it is just as fun and engrossing as it was when I read it for the first time last year, and I look forward to finally writing a review!

RailheadThe Nameless City

Railhead by Philip Reeve (ARC)
4 Stars. A diverse teen epic sci-fi with a choppy writing style but mind-blowing universe. Review to come.

The Nameless City by Faith Erin Hicks (PBK)
3 Stars. It had a bit of a slow start but overall it was a fun and adventurous Middle Grade comic with relatable characters and an exotic setting. I look forward to reading the next volume.

>> READING NEXT <<
The Demon Prince of Momochi House, Vol. 4
The Demon Prince of Momochi House vol. 4 by Aya Shouoto (PBK)
This is on its way as I type! *flails* After the explosive vol. 3 climax, I'm excited to see how the series expands!
