WoW: Raging Sea (Michael Buckley)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly blogging event hosted by Breaking the Spine, in which one spotlights an upcoming release they are eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Raging Sea (Undertow, #2)
Title: Raging Sea (Undertow #2)
Author: Michael Buckley
Release Date: February 2, 2016
Publisher: HMH BYR
Summary:
In the first book of Michael Buckley’s Undertow trilogy, the Alpha arrived and the world was never the same. At the start of the second book, most of south Brooklyn is in ruins and the nation is terrified. Nearly everyone that Lyric Walker loves is either missing or presumed dead, including the mesmerizing prince Fathom. It’s up to Lyric to unite the Alpha before the second wave of a cataclysmic invasion wipes out mankind for good.

The Undertow trilogy is an unforgettable reading experience that author E. Lockhart calls, "Allegorical and romantic, the book nevertheless reads like an action movie with especially awesome CGI."

Why I'm Looking Forward To It: I recently devoured the first book, Undertow (review to come), and after the explosive ending I'm eager to get my hands on this sequel!

So what book are you waiting on?

Release Spotlight: SIDEKICK (Natalie Whipple)

Today I spotlight the release of Natalie Whipple's latest, Sidekick! Natalie is an amazing writer who tells amazing stories, and although I won't be able to read this one myself for a while (alas the paperback doesn't release until late next year T-T) I definitely recommend you check out this and all of Natalie's books, more of which I've linked below!

Sidekick

Title: Sidekick
Author: Natalie Whipple
Publisher: Whipple House
Release Date: 11/10/15

Russ is tired of coming in second to his best friend, Garret. Whether it's in sports, in school, or with girls, he can never get ahead. Something has to change, and when a new girl comes to town he sees his chance. He has to win her over before Garret does, but proving he's not second best won't be easy when Garret is a pro.

Russ will do anything to beat Garret, including using his little sister to get closer to the new girl. He has to be careful, though, because if anyone at school finds out he attends anime night (and he might even enjoy it), it would ruin his reputation, just like his secret love for cooking and James Taylor.

But pretending to be something he isn't will catch up to him eventually, and Russ can only get away with living two lives for so long. As more than one friend reveals they aren't who they seem, Russ must figure out what and who he really wants in his life. And more than that, he needs to find the courage to make it happen.

Small Screen Review (11/1/15-11/7/15)

I watch quite a bit of telly. More than I should, really. So since I watch as much television as I read books, I thought I should "review" what I watch each week, both television and movies (I only watch movies on DVD at home, long story). Nothing fancy, just a few sentences about what I thought of what I watched. (I'll try to avoid spoilers, but no promises.) Comment with your thoughts on the shows!

Special Note: Sorry this disappeared a few weeks! It should be back to its regularly scheduled slot now.

This Week's Best Episode
Once Upon a Time

NEW SHOWS

Supergirl: Although Episode 1 wasn't quite as bad as I'd thought it would be, after putting off watching Episode 2 for a week it looks like we'll be passing on the show.

CONTINUING SHOWS

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Oh yeah there were other threads besides Gemma's alien planet one. A tense and interesting episode, and I did NOT see the twist coming. Next week should be good!

Blindspot: Finally a pretty solid episode with some interesting twists to come. I really enjoyed Patterson's boyfriend so I'm hoping he returns somehow.

Bones: How they continue to come up with new ways for bodies to be found astounds me. An entertaining episode.

Castle: On hiatus. Sadly, I'm not crushed.

Elementary: It's back!! This is one of the rare shows where I care more about the characters than the cases, and so far I'm intrigued by where Sherlock and Watson's story is heading. Definitely looking forward to next week.

Fresh Off the Boat: Eddie's stories finally begin to entertain! Loved last week's Halloween solution and this week's affairs of the heart. There's hope for the boy after all.

The Great British Baking Show: So proud of Ruby as she continues to excel despite her best efforts. Rooting for her to take the crown now, and at the moment it appears she's at the top with Kim.

iZombie: Another excellent episode, although I'm not crazy about the [re]budding romance.

Last Man Standing: We were a little lost about what was going on since we haven't seen last season, but funny as always.

Limitless: An interesting episode. I like that the voices in his head are multiplying - it shows the madness that's still growing teeth under the shot's effects, and I'm hoping it continues.

Master Chef Jr.: It's back, and wackier than ever. Quite the young lineup this time, and not as impressive. But reality show contestants are rarely impressive in the first episode, so I'll suspend judgment for now.

The Muppets: Highly amusing but we're losing interest with the show.

Once Upon a Time: A focus on Dark Swan, Belle and Hero Rumple equaled an epic episode I absolutely enjoyed and easily earned best episode of the week! Not impressed with the Arthur thread but at least we've hit a turning point so stupidity won't be quite as rampant.

Person of Interest: Season Premiere Unknown

The Player: Always an exciting watch but there were a lot of inconsistencies this week, and both overarching threads are confusing.

Scorpion: A really good episode since Ralph played a big part (Ralph is our favorite). But while the show is getting better, the inconsistencies of intelligence between the characters and the show's writers lead to a lot of frustration and screaming at the screen.

DVD

Haven (Season 1): As I eagerly await the new season, I got a serious craving for the show and picked up Season 1 again. So far I'm enjoying it even more than I did the first time!

Cinderella: Although I'd heard more bad than good about this movie, I of course had to see it. While my mother enjoyed it, I found it unexceptional and rather dull except for the bites of humor and Helana.

So that's it for this week! What did you watch?

WoW: Night Speed (Chris Howard)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly blogging event hosted by Breaking the Spine, in which one spotlights an upcoming release they are eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Night Speed
Title: Night Speed
Author: Chris Howard
Release Date: May 3, 2016
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Summary:
Only those young enough can survive the pulse-pounding rush of tetra, a dangerous and addictive new drug that fuels a nine-minute burst of superhuman strength and speed. Alana West has been trained to use the drug so she can pursue the young criminals who abuse its power—criminals like the breakneck who nearly killed her kid brother.

On tetra, Alana is unstoppable. The rush makes her an explosive blur as she surges through New York City, battling to bring down breaknecks before they leave more people dead or injured in their wake. But with the clock ticking down to her eighteenth birthday, Alana will soon be too old for the rush...when just one more dose will prove deadly.

Supported only by her strong and steady handler, Tucker, Alana goes undercover, infiltrating an elite gang of breaknecks to stop the supply of their drug. But when Alana gets trapped on the wrong side of the law, she learns the breaknecks are not quite what they seem—especially Ethan, the artistic boy whose bottomless brown eyes seem to see the truth inside her. With her own dependency on tetra increasing, Alana must decide where her loyalties lie before the rush ends. Forever.

Why I'm Looking Forward To It: With the gorgeous cover revealed on Cuddlebuggery this week (check out the reveal here!), I'm excited to finally feature this epic Limitless meets Fast & Furious story, which has been on my Goodreads "need-like-air" shelf since May! Sounds (and now looks) like it's going to be quite a rush!

Release Spotlight: MANNERS & MUTINY (Gail Carriger)

Today it is with great pleasure and excitement that I spotlight the release of Manners & Mutiny, Book the Fourth and final installment in the Finishing School series by Gail Carriger!! I thoroughly enjoyed the first three books, and after the twists at the end of Book 3 I have been anxiously awaiting this conclusion! If you haven't yet heard of this amazing series, links for the first three books are at the bottom, along with links to my reviews if you need any more convincing. ;)

Manners & Mutiny (Finishing School, #4)

Release Date: 11/3/15

If one must flirt...flirt with danger.

Lessons in the art of espionage aboard Mademoiselle Geraldine's floating dirigible have become tedious without Sophronia's sweet sootie Soap nearby. She would much rather be using her skills to thwart the dastardly Picklemen, yet her concerns about their wicked intentions are ignored, and now she's not sure whom to trust. What does the brusque werewolf dewan know? On whose side is the ever-stylish vampire Lord Akeldama? Only one thing is certain: a large-scale plot is under way, and when it comes to fruition, Sophronia must be ready to save her friends, her school, and all of London from disaster—in decidedly dramatic fashion, of course.

What will become of our proper young heroine when she puts her years of training to the test? Find out in this highly anticipated and thrilling conclusion to the New York Times bestselling Finishing School series!

Summary:

Class is back in session...

Sophronia continues her second year at finishing school in style--with a steel-bladed fan secreted in the folds of her ball gown, of course. Such a fashionable choice of weapon comes in handy when Sophronia, her best friend Dimity, sweet sootie Soap, and the charming Lord Felix Mersey stowaway on a train to return their classmate Sidheag to her werewolf pack in Scotland. No one suspected what--or who--they would find aboard that suspiciously empty train. Sophronia uncovers a plot that threatens to throw all of London into chaos and she must decide where her loyalties lie, once and for all.

In a Sentence: Sophronia and team become embroiled in another grand adventure with even grander consequences, romance, and thrills that I was delighted to read - twice!

Three Words: Fun. Flirty. Fantastic.

As always with Gail Carriger's books, two reads were required to produce this review. I tend to enjoy the first read so much that I am incapable of putting my enjoyment into words, and have to wait and read the book again to produce any sort of objective review. As also per usual I enjoyed the second read even more than the first, and now await the final installment in the Finishing School series with great anticipation and excitement!

Miss Gail's stories are a pure joy to read, her writing witty and fun and delightfully British (especially since I read the British edition the first time). She is a mistress of description but also especially of dialogue and had me in stitches on many occasions. One of my innumerable favorite bits:
...Pillover pulled up, panting. ‘Oh, Sophronia, thank goodness. Save me? Please? All those young girls, in pastels, talking about the weather. I shall go and jump off a bridge, I swear I shall. Do you have bridges in Wiltshire? They chatter, they chatter worse than Dimity ever did. Oh, the chattering! The chattering, it haunts me.’
Main character Sophronia continues to gain confidence and thrive as an intelligencer-in-training, but the more powerful she becomes, the greater the risk - and the graver the consequences. In this book, Sophronia and team end up on a grand adventure traipsing about the countryside in less than conventional attire via several modes of transportation obtained by less than conventional methods. They of course become entangled ever deeper in the escalating Picklemen-Supernatural conflict, and after much internal and external struggle Sophronia finally takes a side - and a patron! The story was a mad dash with lots of close calls and deadly encounters that made for a quick and thrilling read, and all the players were transformed in some manner by the end - a few in rather drastic ways - which shall see that nothing will be the same in the final book.

On the romantic front, Soap and Felix returned to vie for Sophronia's affections, and Pillover finally (albeit accidentally and to his chagrin) threw his hat in the ring. While I will always root for Soap over Felix (I never thought Felix particularly suitable), I've really been Team Pillover from Book 1, Page 1 (or, more precisely, Page 18) and believe he would make the perfect husband figurehead for dear Sophronia and her schemes. But despite the romantic headway made by any of the boys in this book, who Sophronia will end up with in the final chapter is still with Professor Braithwope (that is to say, up in the air, whot? ;).

Conclusion: Yet another thoroughly entertaining read from Miss Gail! Delightful writing, thrilling story, and with the exciting twists at the end I'm anxious to get my hands on the final installment in the series, Manners & Mutiny, out November 3, 2015!
