What I Like About You by Marisa Kanter (HBK)
Re-reading the hardcover of this fun and flirty YA contemporary romance to finalize my blog tour review. Be on the lookout for my post April 29th!

The Bone Season (The Bone Season, #1)
The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon (PBK)
I really want to re-read this for review but just wasn't feeling it at the moment. I've set it aside for a few other books and will hopefully return to it soon.

Heart of Iron (Heart of Iron, #1)
Heart of Iron by Ashley Poston (ARC)
4 StarsA thrilling teen sci-fi of violence and romance that moved way too fast for me to truly connect with the characters or feel much of an emotional impact but definitely entertained. I look forward to finishing the duology with Soul of Stars when the paperback releases later this year. Review to come.

Angel and Bavar by Amy Wilson (ARC)
I loved this book so much but was unable to write a coherent review. Desperate to sing it's praises, a re-read for review is naturally in order!

The Bone Season (The Bone Season, #1)
The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon (PBK)
Re-read. Randomly decided to give this another read for review. According to my original notes, I went into it the first time knowing very little but it was nothing like what I expected. This time, aside for a few vague recollections, I'm going into it rather blind again so I'm prepared to be surprised. So far the mass of fantastical terms and acronyms has been a little overwhelming and a lot to keep straight, but I'm intrigued enough to continue. I made it through once, I can do it again, right?

>> DNF <<
Ashlords
Ashlords by Scott Reintgen (ARC)
DNF at Chapter 2. Read the 1st chapter but was so SO confused by a vast lack of world-building description and clarification of terms. This made the story really difficult to absorb - I had to re-read several paragraphs multiple times but STILL didn't understand and had to push on despite my disorientation. I can appreciate minimal detail, but trying to process whatever this fantasy-meets-Old West-meets-dystopian mashup is without more setting and magic detail made for an extremely frustrating read. Lower reviews on Goodreads say much of the world is never really expanded on, so given my Chapter 1 exasperation I think I'm sadly going to pass on the rest.

>> JUST FINISHED <<
Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side
2.5 Stars. Re-read. This was a favorite of mine back during the YA vampire craze, but wow it was not what I remembered. Did I really enjoy such unhealthy relationships when I was younger? Hopefully I'll be able to review, but I'm so confused atm.

Drama girl Maddie Brooks has always had high standards for guys. But she has yet to find one who can live up to the romantic, classic Hollywood heartthrobs, especially the dreamy song-and-dance man Gene Kelly. When Maddie begins to carpool with Jesse Morales, her new neighbor and star pitcher of the baseball team, she's struck by his wit, good looks, and love for his family--but a guy so into sports is definitely not her style. Then Maddie discovers that Jesse was raised as a dancer and still practices in the community theater dance studio to keep in shape. Perhaps her perfect dream guy exists after all! But when it becomes clear that baseball--not dance--is Jessie's passion, can Maddie find a way to let her dream guy go and appreciate the charms of the amazing guy in front of her?

Review copy provided by publisher for an honest review. Thank you, Bloomsbury!

In a Sentence: An easy read with a sweet romance and relatable characters.

I quite enjoyed Kristin's debut, Wish You Were Italian (review here), and due to a repressed dream of acting and an affection for old movies I couldn't pass up this theatrical love story!

"Effortless" was the word that continually sprang to mind as I read this book, which here means it was so easy to read I found myself unable to stop. I would determine to put the book down at the end of a chapter and some minutes later discover myself halfway through the next chapter, and before I knew it I'd breezed through the entire book in two days. Also effortless was the playful and witty dialogue, and the minimalist description was just enough, like a good stage setting.

If I'd attended public school instead of being homeschooled, I think I would've turned out a lot like Maddie. I really related with her, from her love of old movies to her dislike of sports, and understood her high romantic expectations. She deals with an abundance of "new" in this book - state, lifestyle, school, friends, romance, family situation - and while both a lot of good and not so good come from all of them, she finds revelation and clarity about her life ahead and discovers some real love for and from those around her. Jesse was sweet and attentive and despite his love of sports came seriously close to my own dream guy, and his romance with Maddie was one of the sweetest I've ever read while still being very realistic.

Conclusion: An easy read that made me smile and sniffle with its sweet story and swoony romance. With this second home run, even better than her first, I have put Kristin Rae on auto-read!

If Only Series: While technically the 8th book in the If Only series, each book in the series is written about completely different characters and stands alone.

Release Spotlight: What You Always Wanted (Kristin Rae)

Today I spotlight the release of WHAT YOU ALWAYS WANTED by Kristin Rae! I found it an effortless contemporary romance with a personally relatable main character and one of the sweetest love interests I've ever read (despite his sporty proclivities), and enjoyed it even more than Kristin's first book! (You can check out my review of Wish You Were Italian here.) My full review is coming soon, but in the meantime below is all the information and links to get your hands on a copy of this fun and flirty story! (And if you haven't yet checked out Kristin's first book, links for it are at the bottom as well!)

Review: Wish You Were Italian (Kristin Rae)

Wish You Were Italian (If Only . . ., #2)
Title: Wish You Were Italian
Series: If Only..., Book 2
Author: Kristin Rae (site)
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA Childrens
Release Date: May 6, 2014
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary Travel Romance
Told: First Person (Pippa), Present Tense
Content Rating: Teen (thematic elements, kissing)
Format Read: ARC (traded)
Find OnGoodreads
Purchase OnAmazon | B&N | Book Depository
Summary:

The summer before senior year of high school. It’s supposed to be one of the biggest summers of her life, but Pippa is headed to an art program she has no interest in. The one saving grace is it’s in Italy. And when the opportunity strikes, she decides to ditch the program and travel Italy accomplishing her own list of goals. Things like swimming in the Mediterranean Sea, eating a whole pizza in one sitting…and falling in love with an Italian boy!

As she explores the famous cities of Rome and Pompeii, Pippa finds herself falling for two boys: a local guy she knows is nothing but trouble and a cute American archaeology student who keeps disappearing and reappearing at the strangest moments. Will Pippa find her true love before her parents find out the truth about her summer program?

*          *          *

In a Sentence: A fun and flirty teen travel romance with a common plot but relatable characters and smooth writing.

SeriesThis is the second book in the If Only series, but each book in the series is a standalone and can be read on its own without reading the others.

In need of a light read during a few sick days I decided to do some traveling and grabbed this highly recommended "If Only" title. Although the story followed the very common travel romance plot of a tourist girl who is drawn to both a hot bad-boy local and a cute good-guy tourist, an easy writing style and playful dialogue made for a smooth read while vivid description utilizing all the senses brought Italy to life via tastes and smells and the stickiness of summer. The two romances led to an inevitable love triangle for a few chapters, but essentially one was little more than a regrettable crush while the other was flirty and sweet and I adored every second Pippa spent with the boy. While I wish she had taken more initiative in the second half of the book, with both the romance and seeing more of Italy, for the most part her adventure was fun to follow and despite a sad surprise twist at the end the story concluded on a sweet note.

Conclusion: A solid travel read with smooth writing and a sweet romance. I will definitely be picking up Kristin Rae's next installment in the "If Only" series, What You Always Wanted!

For Fans Of: light travel romances
